travelling art scholarship

Download 2009 application form
Closing date for applications: Friday 10 July 2009

The Brett Whiteley Studio, administered by the Art Gallery of New South Wales, invites applications for a major travelling art scholarship in 2009.

The Scholarship is awarded to a talented young artist with an established body of work, who is best able to demonstrate the use and benefit of the scholarship to further his/her art education in Europe.

Mrs. Beryl Whiteley, the artist’s mother, has generously made the funds available for the scholarship, both to encourage excellence in painting and offer young artists the same opportunities to develop their careers as were afforded to her son.

i) The scholarship consists of an amount of $25,000 and a three (3) month residency at the Studio at the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris, administered by the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

ii) The residency is for a continuous period of three (3) months occupancy, from July to September in 2010 (dates subject to change). The scholarship must be taken at this specified time.

iii) The $25,000 must be used by the successful applicant to further their art education in Europe for a period of at least six (6) months, three (3) months of which must be used in conjunction with the residency.

entry requirements:

1 The scholarship is open to artists who are between the ages of 20 and 30 (inclusive) on the closing date for applications, which is Friday 10 July 2009.
2 Applicants must be citizens of Australia, and must have been so for at least the last two years and be currently residing in Australia at the time of processing, judging and announcement of the scholarship.
3 The applicant must submit ten (10) jpeg images on CD-ROM of ten (10) artworks completed by the applicant to demonstrate a body of work.
4 The CD must be submitted together with a completed application form and a non-refundable $20 (incl.GST) entry fee. Payment may be made by cheque, money order or postal note to the Art Gallery of New South Wales and posted to Art Gallery Road, Sydney NSW 2000. Any application form not accompanied by payment will not be eligible for the scholarship.
5 Each jpeg must be clearly titled with the applicant’s name and title of the work and be formatted into a PowerPoint presentation. The title, date, medium and size of each work must also be listed separately on an image list and included with the application.
6 From the ten (10) images submitted, five (5) of the images must be of paintings. The remaining five (5) images may be of works in other media (not paintings).
7 From these five (5) images of paintings, the applicant must nominate one (1) painting (no larger than 1 x 1.5 m), as the work which he/she would prefer the judges to consider in competition for the scholarship. The nominated image must be of a painting and must have been produced in the 12 months prior to the closing date. The applicant must clearly identify the nominated work by marking that jpeg image and the corresponding item in the enclosed image list with an “N”.
8 The judges may, in their discretion, nominate from the submitted images, any other painting also completed by the artist in the preceding 12 months instead of the applicant’s nominated work.
